Kay Landry retired from 28 years of education as a teacher
and counselor and moved to Austin,
Texas. Upon arrival, she joined the Austin-Oak Hill
Rotary Club and spends her time working on the many various projects of the
club.
Kay was born in a small town of Elizabethton,
TN and attended the nearby East
Tennessee State
University earning a B.S.
in mathematics. After teaching
mathematics and computers for several years at Ross N. Robinson Middle School,
she became more and more concerned with the student problems that often
interfered with learning. This led to a
return to ETSU for a Masters in Counseling.
In 1985, she attended a GEAR (Great Eastern Area Rally) bicycle
ride in Lexington, KY
where she was introduced to energetic Ron Landry, who had ridden to KY from Washington, DC
on his bicycle. Kay soon took a position
as a high school guidance counselor in Thurmont,
MD and married Ron. After a tour in Madrid,
Spain, and work experience
with the U.S. Navy she returned to Brunswick,
MD as a middle school counselor.
Working with the many students and their many, many problems, she decided that
she needed to know more to help them and enrolled in a doctorate program with Nova Southeastern
University. Her main research related to how students
facing adversities as a child could grow to become happy successful adults and
as a result, she implemented a problem-solving project with fourth graders. This led to other positions of supervisor of
counseling, counselor specialist with Maryland State Department and chair of a
high school counseling department.
Kay has two children, Clint Mays who is living in East
Tennessee and Karen Sandoval who is a resident of Austin.
Although children and youth remain her passion, Kay is interested in
travel, biking, hiking, books, gardening, and new experiences.
